Mazzella Clam Bucket Assembly Rebuild Project – Seifert Engineering

Seifert Technologies is proud to work with companies like Mazzella on important projects to improve their operations.  In this case, we were asked to help mechanically redesign a clam bucket assembly for a 3/4-yard clamshell. 


What is a Clam Bucket or Clamshell Bucket?


A clam bucket, or clamshell bucket, is a two-piece bucket with a hinge in the middle. The two clamshell halves open and close like a clam's shell hence the name.

Clam buckets are efficient at loading because the two shells push into the material, unlike a standard bucket that pushes the material outwards. Clam buckets are convenient because they can be operated using an overhead crane.


What are Clam Buckets Used For?


Clamshell buckets are efficient at loading because the two shells force their way into the material, whereas a standard bucket continually pushes the soil outwards. Clamshell buckets also allow trucks to self-load with a crane, freeing up site machinery for other uses. Clam buckets are used to pick up small items and can be attached to a variety of machines. They are often used in construction, landscaping, and agriculture.


Clamshell buckets have a wide jaw that opens to 180 degrees and a thick cutting edge that closes it tightly. They can be used for material loading and dumping, cleaning up dirt and sand, and even use as a grapple to handle refuse.

Clamshell buckets are well suited for larger civic projects or making applications that require moving significant loads. They are also suitable for gardening, landscaping, and agriculture machines.


Who is Mazzella?


Mazzella is one of the largest independently owned companies in the overhead lifting and rigging industry.  a company that manufactures and distributes lifting products for industrial, commercial, and specialty applications. Founded in 1954, Mazzella is headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, and has over 30 locations throughout North America.


Mazzella provides a wide range of lifting products, including:

  • Engineered lifting devices
  • Rigging hardware
  • Slings
  • Training
  • Warehousing
  • Metal roofing.

Seifert Technologies Scope of Work:

Our engineers retrieved all the pertinent information for the 1 cubic yard clamshell that was provided by the Mazzella company.  They were able to supply previous CAD drawings along with any of the documented loading information.  The Seifert Technologies Engineering department then modified the original design using Autodesk Inventor and verify the structural integrity of the design’s frame weldments.


Then, our team designed a new upper section of the clamshell consisting of the base and the side frames. To improve the functionality of the original design. We also specified a new foot-mounted gearcase as well as a larger motor with brake assembly.

Once the engineering team at Seifert Technologies was finished specifying the purchased components, we then focused on designing a new ¾ & 1-yard bucket that would be able to attach to the upper structure by only changing out the pins. The electrical portion of this project was completed by Mazzella.


By using extensive analysis on the design level, we were able to keep fabrication costs to a minimum.  We were also able to keep the resulting fabrication to a common componentry between 3/4 and 1-yard clamshells.

The team at Mazzella was part of the entire redesign process and met on a bi-weekly basis. Together Seifert’s Engineering team and the team at Mazzella were able to improve operations and update the design of the clamshells. This transformed the manufacturing process in steel. It led to the invention of the telegraph, telephone, television, and radio. Advancement in transportation was drastically improved leading to increased urbanization. The Third Industrial Revolution is known as the Digital Revolution. It happened in the late 20 th century with digital technology. This was the rise of the internet and digital computers. This changed the way people interacted with each other. The World Wide Web was developed. This led to the digitalization of every known modern aspect of life. The Fourth Industrial Revolution is referred to as Industry 4.0. This revolution is known for technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), 3D printing, and robotics. The Fourth Industrial Revolution is expected to have impacts on society to increase quality, production, and drive economic growth.

Phishing, Smishing, and Vishing are all ways that people try to get sensitive information from other people. They are all done in similar ways, but they have different ways of getting this information. It is important to know the difference between the three and how it looks when someone is getting targeted. Phishing Phishing is an online scam that gets sent to email accounts. It consists of getting sent a link or attachment from an unfamiliar email domain. When a user clicks on the link or attachment that is when the sender gets access to data. There are many different types of phishing to watch out for. Some of include spear, email, and whaling. Spear phishing is when someone specifically targets one person. They do this by adding their name, job, or social life. Whale phishing is when someone targets a big target like a manager, owner, or celebrities. They target these people since they have a lot of information on companies or other people. Smishing Smishing is a scam that gets sent as a text message (SMS). Scammers send a text to a target. The text that the target receives looks like a text from a trustworthy company. The scammers make the message look like it is the real company, and they send a link that they want the target to click on. There are different ways that these messages look. It can look like you won money or a prize. It can also look like a tax report or bank statement. Vishing Vishing is a scam where the target gets called over the phone rather than receiving a text message or email. The target is selected, and they call trying to convince them to download software for their device. How To Protect Yourself from All Three There are many ways to prevent these things from happening. Most importantly, do not click on links or attachments from unknown sources. Report suspicious emails, text messages, or calls that you receive.
