End of Life for Server 2012

Seifert Technologies • March 23, 2023

With technology advancing every day, it is no surprise to see older servers and other technologies becoming outdated and no longer supported. This is now the case for Windows 2012 / 2012 R2 server. Clients using these servers must take action to stay supported and protected.

End of Server Deadlines and What This Means

If you are currently using Windows 2012 / 2012 R2 server, it is important to know that the End of Support is October 10, 2023. It is recommended to make an update to your servers well before this date arrives, which means beginning this process now.

Options Moving Forward

If your company will be affected by the end of life for these servers, you may be wondering what to do next. Let’s take a look at the options available to you.

Upgrade to Windows Server 2019 or Server 2022

For customers wishing to keep their servers on-site, Seifert Technologies can help you upgrade to Windows Server 2019 or Server 2022. If your servers are old, you may need newer hardware to install Server 2022, as there are hardware requirements that must be met to enable certain features on this operating system. Newer hardware and the newer operating systems provide functionality, efficiency, and performance enhancements well beyond what was available in 2012.

Migrate Your 2012 Servers to Azure

Azure is Microsoft’s cloud platform, allowing you to move your apps and workloads from on-premise windows servers and SQL servers over to Azure Virtual Machines. This will remove the onus of maintaining your own hardware, allowing Microsoft to handle that burden.

Azure allows you to run securely with free Extended Security Updates (ESU) for three more years after the deadline for the Windows and SQL servers. Your old hardware will no longer hold you back, as your servers will run on enterprise-level hardware that Microsoft Azure provides.

This platform is a pay-as-you-go service, charging you only for what you are using. It is not inexpensive, and there are things to consider using an all-online service, which is why it is best to consult with a company like Seifert Technologies to help with making these decisions.

Magnifying glass with a sticky note with the words

Extend Support for Server 2012

If improving performance and efficiency are not in your wheelhouse, you can stay where you are and purchase Extended Security Updates to get 3 more years of security updates for Windows Servers 2012 and 2012 R2.

In Summary

If you have Server 2012, you need the help of a trusted technology partner to assist you in preparing for Microsoft’s end of support for this product. Whether you choose to go with Azure or stay on-premise, as a Microsoft Gold Partner, Seifert Technologies is here to help.
